Celebrating My Birthday With My Very First Blog Post!

Hi Loves!

I’ve been wanting to start a blog for many years now, and now is the time! When you start a business, you quickly become the head of every department. My main focus has been on growing our team of phenomenal therapists; and serving our clients well. This has put marketing towards the backburner. However, this year it’s time to focus more on connecting to our wonderful Head First Health Community :)

For this year’s birthday, I thought about what I wanted to do, and realized that putting more time and attention into our marketing at Head First Health, was just the perfect present. What better than to start a blog than on my birthday?!

Before we start producing new content, I thought it would be lovely to write about how Head First Health came to be. Starting with our name and then eventually discussing who we serve, what we do, and how we help.

Head First Health began with a vision that psychotherapy in Chicago could be done differently

I chose the name “Head First Health” as a double meaning.

For the years I spent in Chicago working with millennial women with anxiety–I noticed a common theme. No one ever felt “ready”. They never felt ready to face their fears. They never felt ready to do an exposure. They never felt ready to start or end a relationship. I knew that waiting on feeling ready was not a solid choice, because then we would be waiting forever.

In sessions, my motto became, “Dive in.” Let’s start before you’re ready. DO the scary thing then you’ll feel the confidence. Head First. Be messy. I am proud of you. You are brave.

So naturally, when starting my practice, this head first mantra popped up.

The second meaning of Head First Health came from my early experience of working with clients and noticing the many factors of health that influenced their progress.

I was supporting their mental wellbeing, however, if their physical health was not doing well then it was very, very difficult to make positive changes in their mindset. Many of my clients are high achieving career driven women. Perhaps they were physically well, but Spiritually void. I knew that to be mentally well, we also have to consider the other health factors. We need to look at ourselves holistically. Let’s remember all of these elements of health and I’ll ensure we keep our Head Health, First.

January 30th 2020 was our opening day. I thought it was the perfect way to start the New Year. My vision board was set. I was nervous AF, but I was diving in anyway.  I began as a solo practitioner, and my therapy model was hybrid (yes, I was an OG of virtual therapy in Chicago.) I literally said out loud, “I see clients virtually, and in-person. Time will tell which path I end up diving into.”  6 weeks later, The Pandemic started and God answered my question clear as day.

For the next 2+ years, the world was in turmoil. My schedule was completely full. I had a waitlist a mile long, and I just could not keep up with the demand.

I knew I wanted to “one day” begin my own group practice, and it started feeling more and more like that day was coming.

I was terrified. A familiar feeling. I fell back on our name–and dove in.

I hired our first therapist in August of 2021, and never looked back. From there we kept growing, kept serving, kept diving in.

And here we are now. 3.5 years, 6 clinicians, and 1 assistant (Jill of all trades) later.

In my next post, I am going to cover more of the nitty gritty about HFH. I will discuss who we serve, what we do, and how we help.

For now, I am asking for a small and meaningful birthday present.
