ADHD FAQs
(Frequently Asked Questions)

We understand that seeking counseling for ADHD can raise questions and uncertainties.

To put your mind at ease, we've compiled some frequently asked questions about our counseling process at Head First Health. If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to us directly. Our therapists are here to support you every step of the way.

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with functioning or development. In adults, ADHD can manifest as difficulties in sustaining attention, organizing tasks, managing time, and controlling impulses.

It’s our perception of an experience, not the actual experience itself that often leads to us feeling unwell, and powerless. CBT allows us to take charge of our thoughts and learn new ways of coping with life events.

In CBT you get “homework” to do between sessions. These exercises will help you learn to apply the skills and solutions you come up with in therapy to the way you think and act in your day-to-day life.

  • ADHD symptoms vary by individual but commonly include:

    • Difficulty sustaining attention on tasks or conversations

    • Frequent forgetfulness or losing items

    • Trouble organizing tasks and managing time

    • Impulsive decision-making or speaking out without thinking

    • Restlessness or difficulty remaining still

    • Difficulty following through on commitments or instructions

    • Trouble regulating emotions, leading to frustration or overwhelm

    • Hyperfocus on certain tasks while struggling to engage in others

  • ADHD is categorized into three types:

    1. Predominantly Inattentive Presentation – Difficulty focusing, organizing, and completing tasks without significant hyperactivity.

    2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation – More noticeable restlessness, impulsivity, and difficulty waiting or staying still.

    3. Combined Presentation – A mix of inattention and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.

  • If your ADHD symptoms are interfering with your ability to manage responsibilities, relationships, or overall well-being, seeking help from a mental health professional can be beneficial. Signs it may be time to get support include:

    • Struggling to meet deadlines or manage tasks at work or school

    • Feeling overwhelmed by daily responsibilities

    • Experiencing frequent frustration or mood swings

    • Difficulty maintaining relationships due to impulsivity or forgetfulness

    • Procrastination or avoidance of tasks due to inattention

    • Low self-esteem stemming from challenges related to ADHD

  • Therapy can provide personalized strategies to help manage ADHD symptoms and improve overall functioning. A trained therapist can support you by:

    • Developing executive functioning skills – Learning strategies for time management, organization, and prioritization.

    • Improving focus and productivity – Identifying tools and techniques to sustain attention and reduce procrastination.

    • Managing impulsivity and emotional regulation – Practicing coping mechanisms for frustration, overwhelm, and decision-making.

    • Building self-confidence – Reframing negative self-perceptions and working on self-compassion.

    • Enhancing relationships – Learning communication techniques and strategies to navigate social and professional relationships effectively.
