🌸 May is Mental Health Awareness Month! 🌸

It's a time to recognize the importance of mental health and the impact it has on our lives. But what does being mentally well really mean? And how is it different from having a mental health diagnosis?

Being mentally well means taking care of your emotional and psychological needs, just like you take care of your physical health. It means recognizing and managing stress, building positive relationships, and having a sense of purpose and meaning in your life. It's about feeling happy, fulfilled, and able to cope with life's challenges.

Being mentally well involves several components that contribute to our overall mental health and well-being. Here are some of the main components of mental wellness:

  1. Emotional regulation: The ability to manage and regulate emotions effectively, including recognizing and responding to stress, anxiety, and other emotions in a healthy way.

  2. Positive relationships: Developing and maintaining healthy and supportive relationships with others, including family, friends, and colleagues.

  3. Physical health: Taking care of one's physical health through regular exercise, healthy eating, and adequate sleep.

  4. Self-care: Engaging in activities that promote self-care, such as meditation, yoga, or hobbies that bring joy and relaxation.

  5. Sense of purpose: Having a sense of purpose or meaning in life, whether it be through work, hobbies, volunteer activities, or other pursuits.

  6. Resilience: Building resilience to cope with life's challenges, setbacks, and stressors.

  7. Positive mindset: Developing a positive mindset that includes self-compassion, gratitude, and optimism.

In future blog posts we’ll discuss these 7 factors in more detail—so stay tuned :)

On one end we have mental wellbeing, and then there is also meeting criteria of a mental health diagnosis. This means that you are experiencing symptoms that are affecting your ability to function in your daily life. This could be anything from anxiety and depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, postpartum disorders, and PMDD. But having a diagnosis doesn't mean that you can't achieve mental wellness. With the right support, treatment, and self-care, it's possible to manage your symptoms and live a fulfilling life.
