How to Find a Sense of Purpose

Five Techniques from Millennial Professionals to Help Improve Your Sense of Purpose

Do you ever find yourself feeling lost or unsure of your direction in life? As high achieving, millennial women, we're often told that we can do anything we set our minds to, but sometimes that can feel overwhelming and even paralyzing. That's why our team of millennial professionals wanted to discuss some of the techniques we show our clients in therapy on how to better identify a sense of purpose and direction in their lives.

Identify your values

The first step in finding a sense of purpose is to identify your values. What matters most to you? What motivates you? What are your priorities in life? Take some time to reflect on these questions and write down your answers. Our fellow therapist, Paige, offers an entire training on identifying individual values, which we’ll include in a future blog post!

Your personal values could be anything, including curiosity, connection, or even personal growth. By identifying your values, you'll have a clearer sense of what you want to focus on in your professional and personal life.

Explore your passions

The next step is to explore your passions. What activities bring you joy and fulfillment? What do you love to do in your free time? Make a list of your passions and try to incorporate them into your daily life whenever possible.

By exploring your passions, you'll feel more fulfilled and energized in your daily life.

Set goals

Once you have a sense of your values and passions, it's time to set goals. What do you want to accomplish in your life? What steps can you take to get there? Make a list of your goals and break them down into smaller, actionable steps.

By setting goals, you'll have a clear direction and a sense of purpose in your daily life and hopefully reduce feelings of anxiety that might arise.

Find your community

Finding your community is essential to finding a sense of purpose. Surround yourself with people who support and inspire you, and who share your values and passions. Join a club, attend networking events, or volunteer for a cause you believe in.

One cause our therapy practice supports through volunteering is the Salt and Light Coalition. They're a phenomenal organization based in Chicago that spreads awareness about human trafficking as well as supports women who have been victims of it. By finding a community that you can be a part of, you'll feel more connected and motivated in your daily life.

Practice gratitude

Practicing gratitude is an important part of finding a sense of purpose. Take time each day to reflect on the things you're grateful for, even if it’s something small! Because small things matter, and small things add up! By focusing on the positive aspects of your life, you'll feel more content and fulfilled, while lowering potential feelings of anxiety.

Embrace failure

Finally, it's important to embrace failure as part of the journey to finding your purpose. Feeling anxiety about the potential of failure is common, but you can't let it control you. Don't be afraid to try new things and take risks, even if they don't always work out. Failure is an opportunity to learn and grow, and it's often a necessary step on the path to success.
